Herman was involved in a mission directed at the Airdrome at Melun, France on 1 August 1944. His bomber was damaged heavily but managed to return to England and was ditched in the Thames River. Herman was severely injured and died at a civilian hospital in East Church, England. He was buried in a U.S. Military Cemetery in England.
