Bombardier, Ballinger Crew. 381st BG, 533rd BS, 8th AF. Shot down 4 July 1943 in B-17 #42-29928. Mission #7 to Gnome-Rhone engine factory in Le Mans, France. MACR 161. Killed in Action (KIA). While assisting the navigator Lt McConnell reload his guns, Lt Williams chute accidentally opened inside of the aircraft. Lt Ballinger offered up his own parachute but Lt Williams refused. It is thought that Lt Williams attempted to fly the plane after all the crew had jumped. Originally buried by Gerkan soldiers in Alencon, France. Reinterred in Warren, OH.
