Killed in Action (KIA) on 23-Sep-43 in P47-D 42-7995, 353FG/352FS while on a mission to escort bombers attacking the port area of Nantes, France. His fighter flight encountered German fighters NW of Nantes and in the ensuing battle he was shot down by Feldwedle Ernst Henning flying a FW-190 from JG 2/1. The P-47 impacted the ground near Carentoir, France. Lt. Dietz was recovered and is interred in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France, where he lies in Plot L, Row 11, Grave 9.
