Van Ness was killed in action (KIA) on the mission over the Ploesti oil refineries, mortally wounded by ground flak. KIA. 1 Aug, 1943. For his valor and sacrifice in combat, TSgt. Van Ness was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross - posthumously.
