T/Sgt James Van Ness, engineer and top turret gunner at the nose of his assigned B-24D, named, Chug-A-Lug. - TSgt. Van Ness was killed in action (KIA) on the mission over the Ploesti oil refineries, mortally wounded by ground flak. KIA. 1 Aug, 1943. For his valor and sacrifice in combat, TSgt. Van Ness was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross - posthumously.
