Detailed History

Ingwiller is a commune in Bas-Rhin, France. It witnessed a number of aircraft crashes during the Second World War.



On 14 October 1943, B-17 Flying Fortress 42-30709 crashed landed near the town and all 10 men on board were immediately taken Prisoner of War.



On 24 April 1944, P-47 Thunderbolt 42-76570 crash landed 5km north of Ingwiller, and pilot Henry Kaczynski was captured.



An observation aircraft crashed near the commune on 26 November 1944, allegedly killing the two people on board.



In January 1945, a B-17 Flying Fortress made a forced landing near to Ingwiller and was observed by members of the 103rd Infantry Division who were billeted in the town.



On 29 January 1945, First Lieutenant Richard Daniels was killed in action over Ingwiller, when his P-51 Mustang was shot down by friendly fire and crashed in the nearby commune of Bouxwiller.
