My father, Luther E. Godwin, born on 11-02-1919, resides in Chapin SC... and is now 100-years old. He joined the US Navy around 1935. In 1937 he was on the USS Lexington and was on the search for Amelia Earhart when she went missing. After a brief stint in the US Navy he transferred to the Army Air Corps where he flew 34 missions during World War II between March 6th, 1944 and June 24, 1944. His position was engineer/gunner and operated the top turret in his B-24 Liberator. His crew members during the 34 missions were Donald E. Schaning, Robert W. Clark, Thomas B. Lynch, Lloyd JC Gael, Robert J. Chamberlain and Willie H. Williams. He is a member of the Lucky Bastard Club. He retired from the US Air Force in 1966 and did contract work for the CIA/Air America in the late 1960's.
