From the 447th supplement: SSgt Wharton was born in 1923 and before entering the service on March 18th, 1943, he served as an apprentice embalmer to his father , who was an undertaker. After being inducted at Camp Dodge, Iowa, he was sent to Kearns, Utah for his basic training and was placed in the medics attached to the Air Corps. From Kearns, Sgt Wharton was sent to Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Lawson Hospital in Atlanta as a Surgical technician. He Joined the 447th in July of 1943 and has been working in the Squadron Infirmary since that time.
