Fred E Anderson
MilitarySnippet from 93rd Bomb Group unit history - see https://www.americanairmuseum.com/media/25117
Tech Sergeant Fred Anderson was a B-24 Flight Engineer and Top Turret gunner, and flew on Operation Tidal wave on Ploesti. 1 Aug 1943.
While on temporary assignment to North Africa, on bombing run on port at Bizerte, TSgt. Fred Anderson was a crewman on the B-24, Ambrose II, the B-24D-10-CO, #41-23909, when his pilot, Lt. John "Packy" Roche, moved in closer for an extra, more exact run on the target. The airplane suffered a hit to one of their gas lines. Roche made a dead stick landing (previously thought impossible for a bomber). Stranded on the Algerian desert, the crew spent the night protecting the plane from natives. Fred Anderson, injured on the mission and in hospital, missed going back to the U.K. with his crew. So, when he recovered, he hitch hiked on a plane from Africa to rejoin his 8th Air Force unit in England ! (WIA).
