Shot down 30 July 1943 in B-17 #42-29916 'Yankee Dandy', Prisoner of War (POW).
Information supplied by Frank Phaneuf's niece.
"I have been doing some deep research on my uncle, Frank “Bud” Phaneuf, who was the B-17 radioman on tail #42-29916 'Yankee Dandy' in the 91st Bomb Group/323rd Bomb Squadron. He bailed out when his plane was hit by enemy fire on July 30, 1943. He was subsequently captured by the Germans and held in a POW camp for 22 months. He did get some shrapnel wounds (I believe in the leg) and received medical attention while in the Germans’ hands. He eventually came home to my aunt and they had two sons. He passed away in April 1979. I have a photo of him that was sent to my grandma (Bud’s sister) and he was sitting at his radioman position. It was taken 4/18/43. As of right now this is the only photo I have of him. I also have some postcards that he sent to my grandma while he was in that POW camp. They have the censor stamp on them. Kriegsgefangenenlager (POW) and Kriegsgefangenenpost (POW mail)"
