First entered the Signal Corps and then completed training as a multi-engine pilot. Flew B-24s with the 2nd AD including lead positions for the 96th Combat Wing and three different groups on twenty-two occasions. Later, also piloted the P-47 Thunderbolt. [Documents attached to database form. ]
Flew with Bill Campbell when they were both in the 466th Bomb Group.

Magdeburg, Germany | 11 September 1944 | Deputy Group Lead Pilot - 458th BG A/c received a direct flak hit in the bomb bay which set off the smoke marker bombs. The flaps and aileron controls on the right wing were severed at the same time. Jones kept his a/c in formation and his crew in place, dropping his bombs on the lead ship. He was then able to bring his seriously damaged ship back to base and land without further damage to his crew or a/c. |

At the time there was a shortage of radar equipped aircraft in the 96th CBW. His decision not to abort was critical to the missions success. |
