Douglas E Pierce
Military ROLL OF HONOURDouglas E Pierce was a ball turret gunner on a B-24 for the 492nd BG/856th BS Crew 601 Flying 44-40163. Crew 601 was lost on June 20th 1944 during a bombing raid hitting the heavily defended oil refineries in Politz Germany. The 492nd encountered about a thirty minute battle against the rocket firing ME-410s and JU-88s and lost fourteen of the their B-24s. Four of the crewman of the 601 were killed in the fight while the the other six who managed to bail out were captured. Douglas was believed to have bailed out and either killed during capture or prior to capture on the Isle of Ruegen. His body was never recovered.
