"Part of the formation that attacked the Bingen marshalling yard on 2 December 1944 was the Liberator of pilot Herbert L. Bayless of 44 BG (506 BS). Like the ship of pilot Billingsley it was also attacked by German Me-109’s of IV./JG 3 and set ablaze. The aircraft spun down and hit the ground near Schwarzerden (near Kirn). Five men perished, four survived".
