B-24 Liberator

Flown on the August 1, 1943 low-level Ploesti mission returning safely to Libya.
Lost on the night of 14-15 August 1944 under unknown circumstances in the vicinity of Lyon, France; one crewman survived. Waist gunner Sgt John W Gillikin, badly injured, was rescued at the scene of the crash and turned over to members of the Resistance. He apparently recovered from his injuries and evaded capture (MACR 8422).
