42-40746

B-24 Liberator

The B-24D Liberator, 42-40746, Ole Irish, was in the 564th Bomb Squadron, the 389th Bomb Group, and the 8th Air Force, at Hethel, Britain. It was deployed (TDY) to Benghazi, Libya, and flew on the Ploesti oil refinery mission. Ole Irish, piloted by Lt. Frank McLaughlin and Lt. Lee Slessor, had one engine hit by flak and destroyed over their target, the Campina refineries at Ploesti. Old Blister Butt's pilot, Robert Wright, and crew, saw Ole Irish, and their friends, limping away from the Campina area on three engines, and slowed down to escort them as fighter cover as far as the Mediterranean coast.

Lt. McLaughlin gave his crew the opportunity to give their opinions on whether they should try to return, Stinger, to base or head for Turkey. The crew opted for home on one of Benghazi's air bases. They unbolted all of the guns and threw everything overboard they could remove from the plane to lighten the load. Pilot McGlaughlin, Copilot Lt. Slessor, and, Ole Irish, carried their crew the entire distance across the Mediterranean Sea, back to Lete Air Base on three engines. When they got to the coast of Libya, they landed at the first air base they came to at Benghazi, on their three good engines. Then, when taxiing in from the runway, one of the three good engines, the second outboard one, quit, completely out of aviation gasoline. (RTB) 1 Aug 43.
