B-24 #42-40611 'Death Dealer' and crew 409th BS, 93rd BG, 8th AF. Flew successfully on 1st Aug 43 Ploesti raid. On later mission due to damage landing in Switzerland where crew set ship afire and were interned.
Flew on 1st Aug 43 Ploesti oil refinery raid, returning safely to Libya. 1 KIA.
Sustained flak damage 13 Aug 43 mission, lost an engine near the target Weiner, Neustadt and another engine was lost over the target. Diverted to Switzerland. Successful belly landing was made at Wil, Switzerland, crew set A/C alight and were interned. This was the first US A/C to land in Switzerland. One gunner attempted to escape through Germany and was shot.
