On 7 October 1944, two of the aircraft's engines failed as it headed off on a mission. The pilot, Albert Grice ordered his crew to bail out before he risked landing the aircraft.
Seven men jumped, six landed safely but the parachute of gunner Sergeant Edward J Mire failed to open and he was killed.
There is now a plaque near to where the aircraft landed that was dedicated to the memory of Mire on 7 October 2016, by Derick Grey who witnessed the event as a 10 year old boy.
