diverted to RAF Portreath on 19-Dec-44 following a raid on Koblenz, when base socked in. Whilst returning to base 23-Dec-44 and letting down on instruments through the clag, crashed two miles north of Gt Rollright, Oxfordshire, UK (the crash site was actually in Warwickshire) with Cliff Hendrickson, Walter Graves, Co-pilot, Joe Kilmer, Bombardier: Dave Williams, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: George Bruer, Radio Operator: Bob Reidel, Ball turret gunner: Edmund Fitzgerald, Waist gunner: George Hawley, Tail gunner: Cliff Henrich Waist gunner; (8 Killed in Service) (1 Returned to Duty) Salvaged 26/12/44.
