VIII Fighter Command was established as VIII Interceptor Command at Selfridge Field on 2 February 1942.

Company
Created at Camp Pinedale, California, the unit left for England on November 12th, arriving at Liverpool on November 19th. It oversaw signals for the 67th Fighter Wing starting December 10th, 1943, with their headquarters located at Walcot Hall, Lincolnshire. The 326th would later be detached from VIII Fighter Command and be attached to the 1st Bomb Division.

Division
The groups under the command of the 1st Bomb Wing came under the command of the 1st Bomb Division in August 1943. In December 1944, the Division was redesginated the 1st Air Division.
