Detailed History

Oise-Aisne American Cemetery commemorates American fallen of the First World War, however its unofficial Plot E, 100 metres away from the main cemetery is the burial place of American servicemen dishonourably discharged from the forces and executed, either by hanging or firing squad during the Second World War.

From 1949 the remains of 98 servicemen were buried in Plot E, each convicted of murder and/or rape in the European Theatre of Operations, with the exception of the deserter Eddie Slovik, whose body was returned to the USA in the 1980s.

Officially Plot E does not exist, it is not recognized the American Battle Monuments Commission, and visitors are not encouraged. The graves of the 96 servicemen still buried there are intentionally designed to be hard to identify, and are marked with a flat white stone bearing a sequential number.

The names of the men buried in the plot were previously impossible to identify until a Freedom of Information Request in 2009 made them available.
