Detailed History

15 October 1944: 486th Bomb Group B17 43-38137 crashed at Woodhall Farm, Sudbury. Tesco now stands on this site. Young civilian Raymond Smith lost his life, as well as most of the crew. A memorial was placed here in February 1999 with the support of Tesco Stores. A full account of the crash can be found in the Ian MacLachlan/RussellZorn book, Eighth Air Force Bomber Stories.
