8 Nov 1942 B-17F #41-24570 'Panhandle Doggie' suffered severe damage on its first mission to bomb the German airfield Drucat at Abbeville, France, but plane returned with all crew and was salvaged. SSgt McCauley was serving as Ball Turrent Gunner.



Killed in Action 3 January 1943 in B-17F #42-5084 'Panhandle Doggie II' while serving as Ball Turret Gunner. Aircraft took a direct hit flak over the target and crashed into the sea near the Ile de Noirmoutier, France.
