Killed in Action (KIA) 13 December 1942 While on temporary assignment to North Africa, on bombing run on port at Bizerte Roche moved in for an extra, more exact run on the target. 'Ambrose II' B-24D-10-CO 41-23909 suffered hit to gas line. Roche and the crew made a dead stick landing (previously thought impossible for a bomber). Stranded on the Algerian desert, the crew spent the night protecting the plane from natives.
