Howard retired from the U.S. Air Force after 28 years of service at the rank of Colonel. He was a pilot in the Air Force, and flew the B26 Bomber during World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Wars. However due to a shortage in pilots during World War II, he was loaned to the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he also proudly served.
14 May 1943 first B-26 combat mission with the 8th. B-26B-4-MA was on assigned target to Ijmuiden, Holland. On return, the ac spun and crashed at Rougham, Suffolk. Pilot John J. Howell died, but the 5crew members successfully bailed out.
