Object Number - FRE 9045 - The nose art of a B-24 Liberator (serial number 44-40238) nicknamed "Thunderbird" of the 491st Bomb Group.

Graham c Hargrove sr, grew up in an orphanage in Raleigh North Carolina, he had numerous brothers and sisters, all or most I believed served in some capacity in WWII. My grandfather was attending North Carolina state college when he was recruited early on the take a pilots test. I belief he had only completed two years of college…thus he was then commissioned a LT. I. The Army Air corps. I believe about 1941. Graham sr was a rated pilot on the B-17 and B-24. He was also selected as one of the pilots to take part in the training to drop Atomic weaponry. This was a certificate I saw of his after he passed away. The training was given in New Mexico I believe in 1943-45. I cannot recall exactly.

Graham sr bomber called “the thunderbird” a B-24 was one of the last bombers to make the bomb run over the famous “oil refinery” bombing mission, as part of the 852nd bombardment squadron. His crew was cited with shooting down a total of 6 German luftwaffe fighters. Graham sr was a quiet man, who loved his drink, cigars, small dogs and the officers club at Mc Chord Air Force bass. He lived the best he could and gave to all! He loved his grandchildren the most of all. After the military operated his own swimming pool construction and service company for many years. His last unit he was assigned to was the SAGE building on mcChord. I believe he was the company XO. Retired honorably with 23 years of active duty service. God Bless you sir. Thank you for my upbringing.
