Gerhard Ausborn
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
He enlisted in December 1940 and attended Armaments School at Lowry Field and in June 1942 was aboard the 'Queen Elizabeth' to join the 309thFG at High Ercall. That September he was one of sixteen men chosen for a special mission; they were to be part of 'Operation Torch' -the landings in N. Africa -to maintain the Spitfires in support of ground action. In the event the Spitfires were diverted and he joined a quartermaster's unit before being transferred back to his squadron, now part of the 12thAF. He became part of the invasion forces which took Sicily and Salerno, carrying out aircraft maintenance. Discharged in 1945 he resumed farming in Iowa and then became a tax auditor.
