Shot down by flak and crashed along the Scheldt River on the return from a mission to Frankfurt am Main, Germany on 2 March 1944 in B-17G #42-39960. Was last in the Fortress with his Co-Pilot Leroy Teachey when they prepared to bail out. The plane exploded in mid-air and they were both Killed in Action (KIA).
