In April 1943 he was landing a P-47 at Baltimore's NW runway when his aircraft struck the top of a crane and he landed short of the runway and sheared an engine off. The plane caught fire, he suffered a broken tibia which prevented him further training with the Group. He later joined the 353rd in England
