On his 6th mission 20-Dec-42 he was serving as the Co-Pilot of B-17F #41-24581 'The 8 Ball' on a mission to Romilly-sur-Seine France. The plane suffered damage. The Pilot, Capt William R. Calhoun, Jr. ordered crew to bale out over England. He and the pilot crash-landed at Bovingdon. All crew members returned. The aircraft was salvaged on 23-Dec-42.

Romilly-sur-Seine, France 22 December 1942 Served as Co-Pilot of B-17F 41-24566 "The '8' Ball", 303BG/259BS on a mission to bomb the German air depot at Romilly, France. The aircraft sustained battle damage but managed to return to England. The Pilot, CPT William R. Calhoun, ordered the crew to bale out over England and he and MAJ Romig crashlanded at the USAAF airfied at Bovington. The aircraft was considered dmaged beyond repair (DBR) and was salvaged, But Calhoun and Romig ere OK and returned to Molesworth the next day.
