Growing up in Mexia, Ettry Oates attended Mexia High School. Afterwards, he started studies in September 1938 at the Texas Technological College in Lubbock. He enlisted in the Air Corps in April 1942 and completed his basic training at Randolph Field, Texas in March 1943. After completing his pilot training he was sent overseas and assigned on 2 October 1944 to the 55th Fighter Group / 338th Fighter Squadron. He served in that unit until 6 July 1945, flying on 57 missions. Promoted from 2nd to 1st Lieutenant on 28 November 1944 and to Captain on 13 April 1945. Transferred to the 78th Fighter Group on 6 July 1945. He was back in the US in September 1945 and after a 30-day leave, spent at his home in Austin, Texas with wife Janelle and 2-year old son Harvey Randall, he reported to Fort Sam Houston, Texas for reassignment.
