Flew with the 8th AF from Chelveston for 10 missions, without fighter escort, then transferred to North Africa in 1942 to help the 15th AF. We still were assigned to the 8th. These were the first daylight missions for the 8th AF, Flew on Plane 'Holey Joe' #41-24352 B-17. Earlier on 9 August 1942, B-17 #41-23347 'Stork' was first plane loss for 301st when Lieutenant Hair was forced to make a wheels-up landing at RAF Station Church Lawford due to engine trouble. Crew was uninjured.
