17-Feb-42 Assigned as Radio Operator on B-17F #41-24579 [PU-F] "Thumper", 303BG/360BS at Gowen Field, Boise, Idaho. 16-Oct-42 Arrived at Molesworth, UK aboard "Thumper".



23-Jan-43 while serving as Radio Operator in #41-24579 'Thumper', 303G/360BS while serving the aircraft received battle damage on a mission to Lorient, France and upon return nine crew members baled out. Four men were injured. The pilot and co-pilot landed wheels-up at Lulsgate Bottom airfield near Bristol. SSGT Emilio J. Yannie was hit in the forehead, but his Army helmet saved him, then he was was badly injured in the bail out. By the time he bailed out, they were too close to the ground. His legs were severely crushed and he was eventually found by a farmer in a field. He was returned to the USA on a hospital ship in August 1943 and remained in U.S. Army Hospitals in the United States until his discharge on 28 September 1944.

Aircraft was battle damaged and he was wounded, but aircraft managed to return to England and made a crash landing. He was severely injured in the crash when his legs were crushed.
