Peine, Germany | 22 February 1945 | "On the way to the target I saw a train off to the right. It looked like a freight train. Us gunners requested permission to fire at it. Lo and behold the sides of the boxcars dropped and exposed flak guns. The flak was very accurate and I saw one ship shot down. Our plane took quite a few hits, some in or near the gas tanks." - Elmer Horne |
Other Combat Mission #28 |
Osnabrück, Germany | 23 March 1945 | "Enemy fighters were in the area of the target (Osnabruck). I looked over and saw and aircraft without any propellers at 23,000 feet. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Was this a glider or what? Then the bells rang in my head as the other crew members became aware of this aircraft, which was an Me262 of course. We had been briefed on them, but seeing one in combat for the first time was really something. |
