On a mission to Rostock, GR on 24 Feb 1944, B-17G #42-3156l left formation with one engine out and the horizontal stabilizer missing and was last seen going down under attack from fighters eventually making an emergency landing at Oster Hojst, Denmark. Prisoner of War (POW).

Imprisoned at Stalag Luft V1 he was evacuated to Memel as the Russians advanced in 1945, crammed into the hold of a ship and moved to Stettin, then herded into box cars until arriving at Stalag 1V. In January 1945 he was moved yet again - to Barth, which the Russians liberated in April 1945.
