in the Spring of 1942 Ed volunteered for the US Army after completing his civilian medical education. Finishing Flight Surgeon training conducted at Randolph Field San Antonio Texas he transferred into the 525th squadron of the 379th Bombardment Group (H) forming at Wendover Field Utah. Deploying with its ground element to AAF Station 117 Kimbolton England he remained with the 525th/379th until its combat element returned to the US in the Spring of 1945. He briefly served in North Africa until his return stateside latter that Summer. He was soon discharged from the US Army Air Force with the rank of Major.
