Drafted in August 1942 he was sent to the Boeing factory in Seattle for training on the B-17. He went overseas in January 1944 to join the 452nd BG at Deopham Green in England where he served as Crew Chief maintaining one aircraft at a time. Discharged in September 1945 he returned to the family farm for some years before working for the Iowa Dept. of Transport for 27 years.
