Newhart was killed in action on 12 June 1944 in Wayne Blickenstaff's LH-U "Soubrette" and LH-D was reassigned to Capt. Lonnie M Davis as LH-Q. Capt. Davis renamed the a/c "Arkansas Traveller" but kept the mule artwork out of respect for Capt. Newhart.

Killed in Action (KIA) crashed near Dreux in P-47D 42-26402 (LH-U) He had already completed his tour of combat missions; that of 12 June 1944 was just a 'fill-in' as he waited for another posting.

Dreux, France 12 June 1944 On a ground attack mission near Dreux, France. His P-47 was hit by fire from a German fighter. He had radioed his attempt to belly-land but was hit by two more fighters and crashed, killing him.
