Flew in de Havilland Mosquito PR XVI NS569 as camera chase plane for Anvil* bomber which exploded in front of the Mosquito causing an emergency landing at Halesworth. Debris from explosion took out port engine and penetrated plexiglass nose wounding McCarthy in head and forearms. McCarthy returned to cockpit and lowered undercarriage for emergency landing at Halesworth before starboard engine quit.
