On his 6th mission, he flew as waist gunner on Lt. William H. Marcotte crew on the 13 June 1943 Bremen mission. According to Russell Strong: 'Patten had visions of being a flyer himself; he thought that by completing twenty-five missions in any capacity he could be homeward bound and then get into pilot training'. He was a Prisoner of War (POW) at Stalag 7A.

Patten was afterwards owner of the Colfax Envelope Co supplying the Group at no charge. His son took over the business.
