Shot down 22 March 1943 in B-24D 41-23832 'Maggie' while serving as Ball Turret Gunner. Aircraft crashed into the sea near Alte Mellum Island, Germany. He baled out successfully but was drowned before he could be rescued. Killed in Action (KIA).
