Shot down in B-26 Marauder 42-107591 on 8 July 1944, on a mission to Chateau De Ribaucourt. Zahrte was captured and taken prisoner of war. As he was wounded in the upper thigh he was hospitalised in Amiens before being transferred to Dulag Luft transit camp at Wetzlar
