Received the Distinguished Flying Cross on 13 November 1944 "For extraordinary achievement in aerial flight against the enemy from April to July 1944. While serving as flight leader of formations of P-47 type aircraft during dive-bombing missions against important enemy communication and supply centers, Capt JOHNSTON distinguished himself by outstanding leadership and brilliant flying technique. The tactical skill and precision with which he executed exacting attacks upon pin-point objectives in the face of heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire are exemplary of the highest degree of courage and fine airmanship. Entered military service from New Jersey." He flew 88 missions and participated in D-Day strafing.
