Died |
Williamsport, Pennsylvania | 1 June 2003 | Dr. Wallace W. Bednarz Dr. Wallace W. Bednarz, of Harding Ave., Williamsport, died in Manorcare Nursing Home in Williamsport, June 1, 2003. He was born and raised in Stoughton, Mass. He was the son of Antoni and Bronya Julevich (some family members spelled their names Jurgilewicz). During the great depression, his father, Antoni, owned and operated a company that manufactured sporting outerwear and supplied them to many local teams. He eventually sold the company but continued to work for the new owners. His father had been an auxiliary policeman with over 50 years of service. He is survived by his wife, the former Priscilla Pine. Also surviving is a son, Stephen (Kathleen) Bednarz; grandchildren, Derek, Kevin and Andrew, all of Wilkes-Barre; a daughter, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Laychur; grandson, Nicholas and granddaughter, Amanda, all of Oviedo, Fla.; and a daughter, Kathryn Bednarz of San Fransico, Calif. In addition, he leaves a sister, Antonia (Tes) Swanson of Avon, Mass.; a niece, Mary Jane (Richard) Hedden in Orlando, Fla. and niece, Roberta (Richard) Hook; and a nephew, Peter Swanson, both of Avon, Mass. After graduation from high school in 1940, he served in WW II, in the Army Air Corp as a master sergeant and gunner with 64 missions in the African and European Theatres of War. He was a graduate of Boston College High School in 1940 and in 1948, he graduated from Boston University and from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1952. He interned at Maine Medical Center, in Portland, Maine, where he resided at his wife’s family’s summer home. Dr. Bednarz did his radiology internship at Mass. Memorial Hospital in Boston. After graduation from medical school he joined the Air Force and served at Chanute Air Force base as a captain and Wiesbaden, Germany, as a major when the Berlin Wall was built. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he joined the radiology group at the Williamsport Hospital in 1962, where he worked until his retirement in the 1980s. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He went on safaris to Africa, Asia, Canada and Alaska, with one polar bear hunt above the Artic Circle, where they hunted with dog sleds out on the ice. He went on several fishing trips in Canada for muskie, and fishing trips to Central and South America as well as the Great Barrier Reef off Australia. His only disappointment was not to have visited Anarctica. |
