John Herzog’s last mission.
Prior to his assignment to the 384th Bomb Group then Captain Stone flew 25 combat missions with the 92nd Bomb Group, 525th Bomb Squadron. On 10 January 1945 Major Stone flew as Group Lead. his B-17 left the formation 20 minutes prior to the I.P, apparently due to Flak damage. No communications were received from his aircraft regarding the abort. The crash site and fate of the crew are unknown according to MACR 11578. Major Stone is buried or memorialized at Tablets of the Missing Cambridge American Cemetery Cambridge, England.
