Ellis flew P-51’s in WWII stationed in England with the 364th Fighter Group in the 383rd Fighter Squadron. He flew 56 missions and escorted heavy bombers over Germany as well as strafed enemy ground targets ahead of invading armies. Because of his love for Texas, his plane was named the Blue Bonnet Belle. In 1947, he began his thirty-two-year career in the Air Force predominantly in command positions. He retired in 1974 from the USAF as a colonel with a total combat flying time of 422 hours in P-51s and C-130s.
