On 12 February 1943, S/Sgt. Robert K. Riley returned from the European Theatre of Operations and was assigned to this organization and joined. In compiling 25 operational missions in England and North Africa, S/Sgt Riley was awarded the Air Medal, 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was one of the most outstanding of our gunners, and a great source of good, moral and interesting information at this early stage of the unit's development.

The above notation did not state which bomb group that Riley had flown his previous tour with. Likely candidates would be the 44th, 93rd, 301st or 376th Bomb Groups.
