near Carpinone, Italy 1 November 1943 Manzie was the top dorsal gunner on A-20B 41-3333 when it was hit by flak over the target, setting the ship on fire and blowing off the right wing. The tunnel gunner felt Manzie step on him and figured he was coming down to bail out, however he evidently didn't make it.
