Died

Marion, North Carolina 18 February 2014 Robert "Bob" W. Teeter, age 93, of Marion, NC, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness. A native of McDowell County, NC, born December 21, 1920, he was the son of the late Fred and Gladys Atwell Teeter. As a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp serving in the European theatre in WWII, he was a P-47 fighter pilot flying 90 combat missions, two of which were on D-Day in 1944. After his military service he held a private pilot license for 51 years. Bob was a graduate of Lenior Rhyne College and was employed with Marion Manufacturing Company, retiring as Executive Vice President and treasurer after 36 years of service. Mr. Teeter was appointed as the first chairman of the Marion ABC Board in 1984 and served in this capacity until 2007. He was a member of Francis Marion Club, served on the Marion Airport Commission and was a former member of the Marion Lake Club. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and was an usher for 60 years. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Jeanne Tennant Teeter. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Nancy Miller Teeter of the home; three sons, Robert Tennant Teeter and wife, Pamela of Beech Mountain, NC, Richard Walter Teeter and wife Linda of Concord, NC and Eric Porcher Teeter and partner Edward Miller of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Jason Teeter and wife Julie of Raleigh, NC, Laura Jeanne Dildine and husband Chad of Greensboro, NC, Bradley Teeter and wife Wendy of Raleigh, NC and Jennifer Rosa and husband Keith of Rockville, MD and five great grandchildren. His wife's family, son, Brad Ledbetter and wife Mary of Marion; daughters-in-law, Maria of Marion and Amanda of Hickory; grandchildren Chris, Adam, Nathaniel, Josh and Beth Ledbetter and five great grandchildren also survive. If there were one man among us after whom so many of us would model ourselves, it is Bob Teeter. As a young man, barely into adulthood, he volunteered to protect our freedoms, while liberating the lands of those overcome by evil. Once home in Marion, the peaceful man whose heart would not be defined by the devastation of war was a loving husband to his full-of-life wife as they raised three boys. Working his way up in Marion Manufacturing, Bob was able to serve as a role model for his sons, as they grew into the men that their father was: honorable, loving, progressive, hard-working, self-sacrificing men. As their families grew, their partners, spouses, children, and grandchildren would quickly learn that one of God's greatest blessings was to call Bob dad and grandpa ("Bob-Bob"). The extended Teeter family, with Bob at its heart, has shared decades of heart-warming, wonderful, hilarious memories from playing cards at the wooden dining room table on Fleming Avenue, to playing Tripoley and flying kites at the mill house in Myrtle Beach, to wondering what new side-slappingly funny gadget Bob had found at the downtown toy store for the grandkids' Christmas gifts, to touching the clouds in Bob's Cessna as he flew over Lake James and threatened to do a few tricks just for the fun of it, to listening to Bob talk with an inquisitive little boy about the P-47 Thunderbolt at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum the weekend of the dedication of the World War II Memorial in D.C., to enjoying food and friends at the Countryside. Each moment of each day, Bob lived a graceful, beautiful life. We are ever so grateful to have shared it with him.
