Jacob Emil Adamczyk

Military

Jacob Adamczyk was attached to the 853rd Engineer Battalion, Aviation.

He was aboard the troop carrier HMT Rohna with his unit on route to the China-Burma-India theatre from North Africa. The HMT Rohna was part of Convoy KMF 26.

On the 26th November 1943, the convoy was attacked off Bougie, (now Bejaia), by two waves of Heinkel HE177A Grief bombers launching HS293 guided bombs.

Unfortunately only one of the weapons, the very last one, found a target, the HMT Rohna! The Rohna sunk with the loss of over 1000 American servicemen.

This was the first successful attack against American forces using a guided weapon!
