Thomas A Hoge

Military

Hoge was a War Correspondent for the Stars and Stripes, he became famous for writing the first newspaper article about the 1st Demolition Section 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, on 9 June 1944, in which he dubbed the unit the 'Filthy Thirteen'.



While reporting on Operation Market Garden, Hoge was dhot down in C-47 43-16033 on 17 September 1944, after the aircraft took a direct hit after completing the parachute drop, and caught fire. Hoge succeeded in bailing out, but was captured by German forces and held prisoner in Stalag 3C. He was liberated on 16 April 1944.
