John D Mumford
MilitaryMumford was killed in action, aged 22 on 6 June 1944, while escorting bombers on a raid over Galati, Romania. His aircraft came under attack by German fighters and he was last seen in pursuit of two German aircraft. Eyewitnesses in Novi Troyany, Ukraine reported seeing two US aircraft being chased by several German fighters, until one of the US aircraft crashed.
Mumford's remains were recovered and identified by the POW MIA accounting agency in January 2017. He was subsequently reburied in his home town of St Petersburg, Florida.
